WHAT IS BACK PAIN?

Back pain is a very common complaint. Back pain can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp pain that makes it hard to move. Pain in the lower back may be linked to the bony lumbar spine, discs between the vertebrae, ligaments around the spine and discs, spinal cord and nerves, lower back muscles, abdomen and pelvic internal organs, and the skin around the lumbar area.

WHAT IS HIP PAIN?

Hip pain is a common complaint that can be caused by a wide variety of problems. The precise location of your hip pain can provide valuable clues about the underlying cause.

Problems within the hip joint itself tend to result in pain on the inside of your hip or your groin. Hip pain on the outside of your hip, upper thigh or outer buttock is usually caused by problems with muscles, ligaments, tendons and other soft tissues that surround your hip joint.

Hip pain can sometimes be caused by diseases and conditions in other areas of your body, such as your lower back. This type of pain is called referred pain.

HOW TO IDENTIFY HIP PAIN?

When the hip is the usual suspect you may experience:

  • Pain is in your groin
  • Discomfort comes and goes, becoming more frequent over time
  • Pain worsens with standing, walking and activity, and is relieved by rest.
  • You feel stiff
  • You walk with a limp
  • Avascular necrosis, or AVN, is a serious condition marked by death of hip bone at the joint.

HOW TO INDENTFY BACK PAIN?

Most back pains are caused by a herniated disc that presses on nerves in the spinal column. This produces the pain known as sciatica, which can be felt in the hip. You may have a herniated disc if pain:

  • Limited to your back, buttocks or hip.
  • Shoots down your leg
  • Worsens with sitting or bending
  • Improves when standing or walking

HOW TO RELIEVE BACK & HIP PAIN?

Some of the common ways to relieve back pain as well as hip are:

  • Stay Active: Staying active is one of the most important steps you can take to relieve any sort of pain. Exercise also triggers a healing process in your nervous system.
  • Improve Posture: Good posture is an essential part of protecting your back. Follow these tips to help protect your back and hips during common activities:
  • Standing: Keep your back straight and avoid slouching.
  • Sitting: Avoid hunching over.
  • Working at a Computer: Position your keyboard so you can comfortably hold your elbows at a 90-degree angle. Get up, stretch, and walk around at least once an hour.
  • Driving: Sit high and close to the steering wheel. Consider using a lumbar support cushion.
  • Sleeping: Try to lie on your side, or, if you sleep on your back, put a pillow under your knees.
  • Lifting: Avoid heavy lifting. If you must lift a heavy item, keep your knees bent and hold the item close to your body.
  • Healthy Diet: Good dietary sources of calcium include dairy products, and dark green leafy vegetables can help reduce hip and back pain.
  • Reduce Weight: Extra body weight puts more stress on your back and hips.
