VERTIGO: TIPS TO MAINTAIN YOUR BALANCE

Dr. E. A. Varalakshmi, Thursday, November 7, 2019

WHAT IS VERTIGO?

Vertigo is a type of dizziness that can last for a short period of time (minutes) or can last for hours or even days. People who have vertigo have a false feeling of their surroundings moving or spinning. This is usually accompanied by a feeling of sickness (nausea) and a loss of balance. Vertigo is a symptom and not a condition in itself. In most cases, there is a medical condition that causes vertigo. However, sometimes the cause is unknown.

WHAT CAUSES VERTIGO?

The most common cause of vertigo is a problem with the inner part of the ear. If there are problems with the inner part of the ear, then this causes us to feel sick and dizzy.

Other conditions that can affect the inner ear to cause vertigo include Meniere’s disease, motion sickness and toxicity of the ear caused by medicines. A common cause of vertigo in older people is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. This causes intense dizziness (short episodes of vertigo) when you move your head in certain directions. It is thought to be caused by tiny fragments of debris in the inner ear.

Less commonly, vertigo may be caused by conditions that make changes to certain parts of the brain - for example:

  • A stroke.
  • Migraine.
  • Multiple sclerosis.
  • A growth in the brain (acoustic neuroma).
  • Double vision (diplopia).
  • Drinking too much alcohol.

WHAT ARE THE TIPS TO CONTROL VERTIGO?

Some of the ways to control the effects of vertigo are

  • Strength Training or Yoga: Strengthening your core helps avoid falls. Good exercise regime will improve your balance.
  • Use Handrails: Always use handrails when walking up and down stairs. Falls can happen at any age. Making it a rule to use the handrails could save you from a serious injury.
  • Keep Home Clutter-Free: Remove hazardous items from the floor that may trip people, such as stools and scatter rugs.
  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: People with vertigo must ensure that they buy shoes that are comfortable and help maintain their balance. Ensure that your shoes are adept at walking on all kids of terrain.
  • Safety-proof your home: Make sure that your home is safe in every way and that you have taken all precautions in your home to help prevent a fall.
  • Eat Healthy, Drink Fluids, and Get Enough Rest: Sometimes dizziness and light- headedness is a result of too much stress or not taking proper care of yourself. Be sure to drink lots of water, eat healthy meals at regular intervals, and get the rest you need to feel healthy and strong.

If the vertigo is impacting daily life in a serious way, please immediately find a doctor for dizziness.
