KIMS Team Resurrects a Critical Patient from Aortic Dissection

-The procedure involves stopping of blood supply to the brain;

and putting all body organs to rest

Hyderabad, June 09th 2017: The Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital has once again excelled in critical care by resurrecting a 24-year-old young man from Kukatpally, Hyderabad, a severe Aortic dissection condition. This high-risk emergency procedure involves stopping of the regular blood flow to the patient’s brain, and putting all body organs to rest.

Aortic dissection is a complex health condition that could lead to death, and requires immediate surgical care. The patient, a young 6 ft 6inch tall man was suffering from a genetic disorder called the Morfan syndrome for over 15 years. This syndrome involves mutation of the gene that makes fibrillin which results in abnormal connective tissue, leading to disproportionately long, slender limbs with long fingers and toes. The patient also had abnormal sternum (breast bone), and poor sight due to partial dislocation of lens in the eye.

Commenting on the procedure, Dr N Sreedhar Reddy, Senior Consultant Heart Surgeon, KIMS hospitals said, “When the patient was rushed to KIMS, he was suffering from severe chest pain associated with altered consciousness. Investigations revealed the critical condition, prompting us to opt for an immediate surgery. Blood supply was stopped and all body organs were put to rest at 18 degrees centigrade. The 10-hours long procedure involved establishing artificial circulation along with stopping of patient’s heartbeat and circulation.”

The successful surgery resulted in patient recovering from a dreaded condition, and walking to home on just the seventh day.
