What is Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)?

A progressive and irreversible loss of kidney function is the characteristic of chronic kidney disease (CKD), commonly known as chronic kidney failure.

Your body may accumulate hazardous amounts of fluid, electrolytes, and wastes if you have advanced chronic renal disease. Your kidneys filter the blood of wastes and surplus fluid, which is then eliminated through urine.

Kidney disease may have no symptoms till it reaches an advanced stage. 50% of CKD patients realize they have kidney disease when they have already reached stage 5. So screening for Kidney disease is the best way to detect it in time. Those who are at risks like- Hypertensives, Diabetics, Obese, smokers, alcoholics, those with any other chronic diseases like COPD, Heart disease, Liver disease, arthritis, or those using Pain killers regularly, and those who are above 40 years – should screen themselves for kidney disease at least once a year. Treating chronic renal disease aims to stop or slow kidney damage from progressing, generally by addressing the underlying cause and the risk factors that cause rapid progression when not controlled.

What Conditions Cause Kidney Damage?

Life Style Diseases

Diabetes, Hypertension, Obesity, Smoking, Pain killer abuse, Metal containing indigenous medicines, are some of the common causes for Kidney disease.

Glomerulonephritis

A set of illnesses known as glomerulonephritis induce inflammation and damage to the filtration organs of the kidney. These conditions represent the third most prevalent category of renal disease.

Inherited Disease

PKD, a common genetic illness that results in the formation of massive cysts in the kidneys and harms the surrounding tissue, is an example of an inherited disease.

Prenatal Kidney and Urinary Tract Abnormalities

Birth defects that arise as a baby grows inside its mother's womb. For instance, a constriction may happen, preventing the urine's usual outflow and causing it to flow back up to the kidney. This results in infections and might harm kidneys.

Autoimmune Diseases

An autoimmune illness is one in which the immune system of the body rebels against it. One such autoimmune condition, lupus nephritis, causes swelling or scarring of the tiny blood capillaries in your kidney that filter waste.

Chronic Kidney Disease – Symptoms

Until their kidney disease is advanced, the majority of people may not exhibit any significant symptoms. These symptoms may indicate Chronic Kidney Disease:

  • A fluid excess brings on a rise in blood pressure.
  • Swelling over the face and feet or all over the body – due to fluid accumulation.
  • Fluid in lungs – can cause breathlessness on walking, at rest, or lying down.
  • Fatigue and weakness – due to low Haemoglobin
  • Headaches due to high blood pressure (BP).
  • Nausea, Vomiting, Loss of appetite, itching all over the body, and disturbed sleep cycle can be seen in advanced kidney disease – indicating the need for dialysis.
  • If appropriate care is not initiated despite dialysis requiring symptoms- patients may get seizures (fits) and develop loss of consciousness or fluid around the heart – needing urgent dialysis.
  • Hyperkalaemia: High potassium in the blood can cause heart rhythm abnormalities and even sudden death, especially when the Potassium level in the blood crosses – 6.
  • Back pain, or bone pains – due to low calcium absorption from the diet.
