F.A.Q.s

Why did this happen to me? -

You are one among many facing these problems. In fact, these are quite common. At least one-third of women experience these problems in their lifetime. Although pregnancy and childbirth are the main culprits, it can happen in women who have never been pregnant. Straining while having a bowel movement, chronic cough, heavy weight lifting, tumours inside the pelvis, obesity as well as genetic factors are to blame.

What are the related symptoms(Pelvic floor disorders)? -

There are many symptoms. Sometimes a woman can experience more than one at a time.
• If a woman has trouble controlling her urine or bowel movement or gas or is leaking stool
• If she has urgency with/without leakage
• If she is having a problem emptying her bladder
• Frequent urination
• Recurrent urinary infections
• Constipation
• Bulging or dropping in pelvic area
• Feeling some mass/tissue in the genital region

What is the difference between gynecology and urogynecology? -

Gynaecologists are specialists who address issues related to the female reproductive system. ... A urogynecologist is a sub-specialist who specializes in disorders of the pelvic floor. The most common issues that fall into this category are incontinence and prolapse and urinary complaints.

Why do some women have looseness in their vagina and/or protrusion in vaginal areas? -

It is caused by the weakness of the muscles and tissues that are holding them in, at the lower part of the body. Perineal injuries/ tears at the time of delivery lay the path for towards progression of these problems.

What causes pelvic floor disorders? -

Whenever the pelvic floor is disturbed, as in, childbirth where it is stretched to the maximum as in an injury or following a surgery in the pelvis, or because of advancing age, declining hormonal levels, and certain inherited factors, the pelvic organs protrude out of their natural place and thereby do not function properly.

What conditions come under pelvic floor disorders? -

• Looseness of the vagina
• Protrusion of the bladder and/or uterus & rectum down or outside the vagina (pelvic organ prolapse)
• Inability to control urine or faeces
• Chronic pelvic pain
• Lower abdominal pain / burning
• Sexual problems

Isn’t all this a normal part of aging? -

NO. Even though the tissues get weaker, it should not reach the point where any of the above symptoms occur and change the way a woman lives her life.

Can I do anything to prevent this? -

• Strengthen your pelvic floor by doing Kegel’s exercises
• Keep your weight in control by diet and exercise
• Increase your dietary fibre and drink adequate water
• Limit the amount of heavy lifting that you do
• Educate yourself about your problem
• Consult preferably a urogynecologist
