BEATING HEART SURGERY A MEDICAL MIRACLE

Friday, October 25, 2019

WHAT IS BEATING-HEART SURGERY?

During traditional open-heart surgery, it's necessary to stop the patient's heart and maintain the body's circulation through the use of cardioplumonary bypass (CPB), also called the heart-lung machine.

Unlike traditional bypass surgery, the heart is not stopped during a beating-heart surgery. This approach uses special devices to stabilize the part of the heart the surgeon is operating on.

This process avoids many of the complications that can arise from the use of the heart/lung machine, such as stroke, an increased need for blood transfusions, kidney and lung complications, and lengthy hospital stays. Also, stopping the heart is too traumatic and dangerous for some patients to endure. The beating-heart procedure enables a larger, more diverse population to undergo bypass surgery.

Recovery from this procedure is often faster, allowing most patients return to normal activities sooner.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A BEATING-HEART SURGERY?

Compared to traditional heart surgery, beating-heart surgery has been shown to reduce complication rates and recovery times for patients.

Other benefits of beating heart surgery include:

  • Reduced risk of neurological injury, including stroke and damage to the memory function
  • Better preservation of heart function
  • Less chance for heart rhythm, kidney or liver complications
  • Better survival rate, especially among high-risk patients
  • Heart is Not Stopped
  • No Heart-Lung Bypass Machine Required
  • Much Safer
  • Decreased Risk of Kidney or Liver Complications
  • Better Preservation of Heart
  • Shorter Recovery Time
  • Reduction in blood products

IS BEATING-HEART SURGERY WIDELY AVAILABLE?

Beating-heart surgery is technically demanding, requiring specialized skills, and training.

Therefore, many surgeons prefer not to do surgery on a beating heart. However, since the late 1990s, beating-heart surgery has gained favour among leading surgeons around the world, especially for coronary artery bypass surgery.

Why KIMS?

At KIMS, most bypass surgeries are performed using the off-pump coronary artery bypass or ‘beating-heart’ surgery technique. KIMS has performed many beating heart surgeries and has a success rate of 99.5%.

Our heart surgeons’ commitment to excellent service includes rapid consultation and open communication among the surgeons, patients and their families, and the patient’s referring physician.
