Treatments & Procedures

Treatment for heart disease can include lifestyle changes, medications, and procedures or surgeries. After proper risk assessment and clinical diagnosis, depending on the specific type of heart disease following procedures are performed.

For treatment of abnormal heart rhythms, our doctors perform internal cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)where a defibrillator wire is inserted into the patient's heart and connected to an implanted device in the chest to send out a small amount of electricity when needed to jolt the heart rhythm back to normal. Our Cardiology Specialists may also recommend catheter ablation where doctors make small incisions in the areas of the heart that are producing the abnormal heart rhythm. The incisions are then stitched up and scar tissue forms where the incisions are made, stopping the abnormal heart rhythm. A permanent pacemaker may be inserted into the patient's heart and upper chest to provide a reliable heartbeat when the heart's own rhythm is too slow or irregular.

An invasive procedure to treat Coronary Heart Disease may be necessary in people who have severe symptoms that indicate marked impairment of blood flow to the heart. It just may not be possible to wait to determine if a healthy diet and drug therapy are effective. Our team may perform one of the following procedures depending on the progression of the disease.

During cardiac catheterization, a catheter or tube is placed into the heart through the leg or arm. Then, X-rays are taken after a contrast agent is injected into an artery to locate the narrowing, occlusions, and other abnormalities of specific arteries.

Coronary angioplastyis performed usinga balloon to expand a narrowing in the blood vessel to increase blood flow. Although angioplasty is performed in other blood vessels elsewhere in the body, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) refers to angioplasty in the coronary arteries to permit more blood flow into the heart. PCI There are several types of PCI procedures, such as balloon angioplasty, atherectomy, laser angioplasty, coronary artery stent.

Coronary artery bypass is performed by our doctors for people who have angina (chest pain) and coronary artery disease (plaque buildup in the arteries). During the surgery, a bypass is created by grafting a piece of another vessel above and below the blocked area of a coronary artery, enabling blood to flow around the obstruction. Veins are usually taken from the leg, and arteries from the chest or arm may also be used to create a bypass graft.

In cases where the patient's heart is so severely damaged that medications, procedures, and surgical repair cannot help, a heart transplant is conducted by our surgeons.

Heart valve repair or replacement surgery is a treatment option for valvular heart disease. Based on patient's symptoms and overall condition of her heart, our doctor may decide that the diseased valve(s) needs to be surgically repaired or replaced. Traditionally, repair or replacement of heart valves has involved open-heart surgery, which means that the chest is opened in the operating room and the heart stopped for a time so that the surgeon may repair or replace the valve(s). However, our cardiologists may suggest minimally invasive procedures like balloon valvuloplasty. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR, is a new alternative for some cases of aortic valve stenosis and is performed by our expert cardiac surgeons and interventional cardiologists.
