Welcome to the Department of Pulmonology at KIMS Hospitals, a center of excellence for comprehensive lung care. Our well renowned pulmonologists specialize in diagnosing and treating complex respiratory disorders using cutting-edge, minimally invasive techniques.

Specialists in pulmonology and interventional pulmonology help people manage issues with their lungs and airways. These chest-related (often called pulmonary or thoracic) problems are treated using advanced tools and methods. Their expertise includes robotic bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, pleuroscopy, and full airway evaluations.

Pulmonology doctors team up with thoracic surgeons, cancer experts, pathologists, and other needed doctors. They craft a plan for your treatment based on test results, available solutions, a precise diagnosis, and what you need and aim to achieve.

We are one of the few advanced centers in India offering Interventional Pulmonology (IP) services for both diagnosis and treatment of airway, lung, and pleural diseases—without the need for major surgery.

A fresh perspective in interventional pulmonology

Interventional Pulmonology is a super-specialty within respiratory medicine that uses advanced bronchoscopic and imaging techniques to diagnose and treat conditions such as lung cancer, chronic cough, airway blockages, pleural effusion, interstitial lung disease (ILD), and recurrent pneumothorax, often without the need for open surgery.

Doctors specialising in interventional pulmonology stay ahead in using cutting-edge tools for diagnosing and treating diseases. One such tool is robotic bronchoscopy, a game-changing method. Using this technique, doctors can now view and take biopsies from areas of the lung that were unreachable. It helps doctors collect tissue samples from or near the airways that might hold cancer cells. This method has a proven record of shortening the time patients wait to move from diagnosis to getting treated.

Conditions We Diagnose & Treat

Airway narrowing/obstruction
- Airway stricture from benign or malignant causes (tumours, scarring, inflammation)
- Compressed airways due to structural issues or tumours
- Congenital airway stenosis (present from birth)
- Tracheomalacia (weakened windpipe walls causing collapse)
Lung and airway cancers
- Lung cancer – diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment
- Suspected or confirmed lung cancer evaluation
- Cancer in the chest (lung, mediastinal, and airway tumours)
- Endobronchial tumours
- Carcinoid tumours
- Pleural tumours
Pleural and chest cavity conditions
- Pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs)
- Pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
- Fibrosing mediastinitis (scar tissue in the chest cavity)
Infections & inflammatory diseases
- Tuberculosis (active and latent)
- COVID-19 related breathing issues and recovery care
- Recurrent pneumonia
- Fungal and atypical lung infections
- Sarcoidosis
- Granulomatosis with polyangiitis
- Relapsing polychondritis
- Amyloidosis affecting lungs/airways
Chronic respiratory conditions
Airway bleeding & growths
- Hemoptysis (coughing up blood)
- Recurring respiratory papillomatosis (wart-like airway growths)
General respiratory issues

Our IP team specializes in early and accurate diagnosis of lung conditions, even from deep-seated or peripheral lung lesions. These procedures are particularly important in suspected lung cancer, tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, and ILD.

Key Diagnostic Procedures

EBUS-TBNA (Endobronchial Ultrasound-Guided Biopsy) – for sampling lymph nodes and mediastinal masses
Radial EBUS-Guided Biopsy – for evaluating peripheral lung nodules
Cryobiopsy – for diagnosing interstitial lung diseases with higher yield than forceps biopsy
Transbronchial Lung Biopsy (TBLB)
Endobronchial Biopsy – for mucosal or visible airway lesions
Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL) – for detecting infectious or inflammatory diseases
Medical Thoracoscopy (Pleuroscopy) – for diagnosing pleural effusion, pleural thickening, or malignancy

Examinations, Procedures & Non-Surgical Treatments at KIMS Hospitals

Argon Plasma Coagulation (APC) – contactless technique to stop bleeding or ablate tumours in the airways
Balloon Dilation / Dilatation – inserting a balloon to open narrowed airways (airway stenosis)
Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL) – washing the lung airways with saline to diagnose infections or inflammatory lung conditions
Bronchoscopy – flexible or rigid scope examination of the airways
Electromagnetic Navigational Bronchoscopy – guided approach to reach deep lung lesions
Endobronchial Cryotherapy & Biopsy – freezing to remove tumours or take tissue samples; also for granulation tissue removal
Endobronchial Laser Treatment – high-energy laser to shrink or remove airway blockages
Endobronchial Ultrasound-Guided Biopsy (EBUS) – tissue sampling of lung masses or lymph nodes using ultrasound imaging
Endoscopic Lung Volume Reduction – minimally invasive method for COPD patients to improve breathing
Electrocautery & Debulking – removal of airway tumours or masses
Foreign Body Removal – in both adults and children, extraction of inhaled objects from airways
Microknife Treatment of Strictures – precise cutting to relieve narrowed airways
Placement of Endobronchial Valves – to manage persistent air leaks or collapsed lungs
Airway Stent Placement – silicone or metallic stents to keep narrowed or collapsed airways open
Pleuroscopy (Medical Thoracoscopy) – minimally invasive examination of the pleural space for diagnosis or biopsy
Pleurodesis with Talc – for recurrent pleural effusion
Indwelling Pleural Catheter (IPC) Placement – for managing long-term pleural effusions
Chest Tube Insertion & Pleural Fluid Drainage
Radial Endobronchial Ultrasound Biopsy – sampling of small peripheral lung nodules
Rigid Bronchoscopy – for large airway tumours or severe obstructions
Robotic-Assisted Bronchoscopy – precision-guided sampling of small or hard-to-reach nodules
Thoracentesis – needle drainage of fluid from around the lungs
Tracheostomy Placement & Management – creating and managing a breathing opening in the neck
Transbronchial Cryobiopsy – advanced lung biopsy method for diagnosing interstitial lung diseases

Each procedure is tailored to the patient’s unique clinical profile, ensuring optimal safety and comfort.
