DNB Teaching Programme

Our academic program is designed with a “systems approach”. In this approach we take into account differences in educational needs of our DNB students, variations in learning styles, and the range of backgrounds, interest and baseline knowledge of our residents. The students will have the opportunity work in the Neuro intensive care units, Outpatient care departments, Electrophysiology labs and in allied specialities of neurosurgery, Neuro radiology and Neuro pathology departments. In order to better assess the impact of our educational efforts, we look at various outcomes. Residents develop clinical skills in neurology by providing comprehensive care to neurology patients. Special emphasis is placed on certain neurological disorders which include :

  • Epilepsy
  • Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Headache
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Motor Neuron Disease
  • Peripheral neuropathies
  • Alzheimer's
  • Neuropsychological disorders
  • Intraoperative monitoring

Education - The Department of Neurology is devoted to DNB education. Daily, weekly, and monthly recurring educational conferences are abundant and provide residents the opportunity to participate in interactive learning sessions. Weekly Seminars: The major discussion time for students is a weekly seminar session that occurs each Wednesday morning. The goal of the didactic portion of the Wednesday morning conference is to cover a clinical topic with its relevant basic science core.

Case Presentations : Bed-side discussion are interactive and student-run sessions including that are conducted every Friday. The clinical hour would be followed by feedback lectures by the Consultant neurologists providing an integrated clinical basic science update of an important area of neurological disease. Over the course period, every resident will be exposed to an update of multiple topics in clinical neurology and correlative neuroscience. While full-time faculty in the Department of Neurology are responsible for the topics, for inter-disciplinary activities like the Every Monday – Neuro-Radiology meeting, others in affiliated disciplines of neuropathology, neuroradiology, neuro-surgery regularly participate.

Attendance and participation of residents in these conferences provides a foundation for success not only on the neurology board examination, but also for a lifetime in the practice of neurology.

Electrophysiology training: Special Emphasis will be given for training EEG, Video EEG, EMG, autonomic function evolution and TCD . The training aims at ddeveloping a practical approach to the use of standard clinical EMG and EEG techniques, Interpret the findings and clinical significance of abnormal nerve conduction studies, Recognition and interpretation of clinical significance of EMG waveforms on needle EMG, Interpret the Normal and Abnormal EEG and its significance in clinical practice. The faculty interact with students through lively and interactive lectures and discussions and Video based presentations and hands on training at the electrophysiology labs.

Inter-disciplinary training - A singular strength is our interdisciplinary programs with colleagues in the Departments of Neurosurgery, Radiology/Neuroradiology, ENT, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. We collaborate with Hospitals and Centres throughout India to accelerate teamwork and collaboration among health professionals to incubate ideas, define the field and guide program development and research in five core domains: leadership development; collaborative practice and health system transformation; education and training; research and scholarship; and innovative models for public outreach and education.
