FAQ's

1) What is Anaesthesia?

Anaesthesia is a medical discipline which deals with patients suffering from pain. The Anaesthetic agents either numb the pain or prevent the feeling of pain altogether. Thus, it is necessary for procedures such as surgery, certain screening and diagnostic tests, tissue sample removal (e.g., skin biopsies), dental work, etc. The Anaesthesiologists are the doctors who have been specifically trained to give Anaesthetic agents.

2) What are the different types of Anaesthesia?

There are four main types of Anaesthesia. Each has different effects on the body:

  • General Anaesthesia: This type of Anaesthesia affects the whole body, making patients unconscious and unable to move. It is necessary for complex surgeries involving internal organs.
  • Monitored sedation: Similar to general Anaesthesia, it relaxes the body, but the patients are still conscious. This type of Anaesthesia is given with pain relief combinations for procedures such as a colonoscopy, complex dental work, etc.
  • Regional Anaesthesia: This type of Anaesthesia works by numbing the pain and sensation to only the part of the body that needs it.
  • Local Anaesthesia: This Anaesthesia affects only a small part of the body, such as blocking the pain of a single tooth during a dental procedure etc.
