Conditions being treated in Critical Care include:

Cardiac Emergencies

Myocardial Infarction: Reduced blood perfusion through coronary arteries causing chest pain and muscle damage of the heart if treatment is delayed.
Cardiogenic Shock: A life-threatening condition caused by the inability of the heart to provide enough oxygenated blood to the brain and other essential organs. It can be managed if discovered early. The symptoms could include a slow pulse, confusion, sweating, rapid breathing, etc.
Arrhythmias: Also called an irregular heartbeat, arrhythmias are a problem of the heart which beats at a higher or slower rhythm rate.
Congestive heart failure (CHF): CHF is the major cause of cardiovascular mortality, profoundly impacting the functionality and quality of life. In this type of critical condition, the heart fails to circulate the blood properly due to failure in pumping.

Respiratory Distress

Severe Pneumonia: Pneumonia is an infection to the lungs caused by germs causing inflammation and producing fluid or pus in the lungs. Bacteria and viruses can both produce severe life-threatening pneumonia.
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS): A life-threatening condition in which lungs become very stiff with poor oxygenation, capillary endothelial injury and alveolar damage. With ARDS, patient may require higher end life support with ventilators to survive.
Pulmonary Oedema: The abnormal accumulation of fluid in the lungs leading to diminished respiration, causing respiratory failure and may require high end oxygenation support with mechanical devices.
Acute asthma: One of the major noncommunicable disease asthma affects both children and adults. Asthma causes swelling of small airways in the lungs and reduces the diameter causing symptoms such as cough, wheeze, shortness of breath and chest tightness. This is a hypersensitivity reaction to allergens.

Neurological Disorders

Acute Ischemic Stroke: A very serious condition of reduced blood and oxygen supply to the brain. It may require interventions such as thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy, etc. to minimize any further brain damage.
Seizures: Disturbed electrical activity in the brain which can turn life-threatening if the condition prolongs
Encephalopathy: Various types of brain disorders, disease, or damage. These critical disorders could be temporary or permanent, affecting the structure or function. The main symptom of encephalopathy is a change in a person’s mental state.
Coma: Prolonged state of unconsciousness due to brain failure from various causes such as hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, excessive alcohol intake, and medication overdose or illicit drug use etc.

Sepsis and Infections

Life Threatening Sepsis: Condition of immune system responding extreme overreaction to any infection leading to organ dysfunction and shock, subsequently multiple organ failure and sometimes death. It needs to be recognized early and treated promptly.
Septic Shock: The most severe complication of sepsis, septic shock carries a high mortality risk and happens due to activation of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory immune system activation. This causes microvascular injury and a whole cascade of events. It causes dangerously low blood pressure and organ damage.
Severe Tropical Fever with Multiorgan Failure: Tropical diseases such as dengue, malaria, scrub typhus, leptospirosis, typhoid etc can cause fevers leading to very high morbidity and mortality. A large number of these patients require ICU care like mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy, vasopressor support, blood and blood component therapy due to single or multiorgan failure.

Complex Multisystem Disorders

Polytrauma: Multiple injuries can be life-threatening, causing significant disability. The most common causes of polytrauma are motor vehicle accidents; suicide and homicide attempts.
Vasculitis Flares: An unexpected response by the immune system resulting in inflamed blood vessels (blood vessels may be narrowed or close off due to vessel walls getting thicker).
Pyrexia of Unknown Origin: This fever disease is defined as a temperature of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or higher with a minimum duration of three weeks without any established diagnosis even after an intensive one-week investigation in the hospital.
Liver Failure: A complex clinical syndrome with elevated levels of liver enzymes, and hepatic encephalopathy requiring aggressive life saving measures and blood product transfusions
Endocrine Emergencies: A set of healthcare conditions which happen due to hormonal deficiency or excess of hormone production. These emergencies require immediate identification and specific therapies. Any delay could cause significant complications or even death.
Endocrine Emergencies: A set of healthcare conditions which happen due to hormonal deficiency or excess of hormone production. These emergencies require immediate identification and specific therapies. Any delay could cause significant complications or even death.
• Obstetric Emergencies: These life-threatening critical conditions develop during pregnancy, labor, or delivery and have the capacity to endanger both the mother's and the child's health. Pre-eclampsia, Eclampsia, AFLP, HELLP and peripartum hemorrhage are leading causes of fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality.
Post-operative Critical Care: Critical care is necessary for major/ complicated surgical patients that require organ support or invasive monitoring during the peri-operative period. These patients are in need of post operative mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic support, organ supports, and are at risk of chronic multiorgan system dysfunction, cognitive dysfunction, polyneuropathy, myopathy, endothelial cell dysfunction and capillary leak with loss of plasma volume into the extracellular space, etc.
Palliative Care and Post-intensive Care Syndrome: Through palliative care, physical, psycho-social and spiritual burden for patients and their families can be mitigated. Approximately, 14–20% of intensive care patients could benefit from palliative care consultations, partly due to the frailty of an increasingly aging patient population with extensive co-morbidities and consequently increased risk.
Very Low Blood Pressure (Shock): Hypotension (low blood pressure) causes reduced organ function and is frequently managed in ICU and mostly occurring due to hypovolemia (low blood levels), sepsis and cardiogenic shock. The depth and duration of hypotension influences organ failure, morbidity and mortality.
Serious Metabolic Problems (Diabetic Complications): Metabolic syndrome may occur in ICU patients which includes abnormalities such as ketoacidosis, insulin resistance and inflammation. All of these increase the risk of cardiovascular events. Some of the metabolic abnormalities can occur in patients suffering from sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome.
Dangerous Blood Clots: Although uncommon, the symptoms of catastrophic thrombotic disorders pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Rapid onset of thromboembolic blockages is commonly seen in this ailment and can lead to limb and life loss if not addressed promptly.
