WHAT TYPE OF BREAST CANCER DO I HAVE?
There are different kinds and they have different treatment options. Breast cancer occurs in two broad categories: non-invasive and invasive.
- Non-invasive (in situ) Breast Cancer: Cancerous cells remain in a particular location of the breast, without spreading to surrounding tissue, lobules or ducts.
- Invasive (infiltrating) Breast Cancer: Cancerous cells break through normal breast tissue barriers and spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream and lymph nodes.
Breast cancer is also classified based on where in the breast the disease started (e.g., milk ducts, lobules), how the disease grows, and other factors.
Some other types of breast cancer include, but are not limited to: Paget's disease of the nipple, sarcoma of the breast, medullary carcinoma, tubular carcinoma, mucinous carcinoma, metaplastic carcinoma, adenocystic carcinoma, phyllodes tumour and angiosarcoma.

Invasive breast tumours have already started growing in neighbouring healthy breast tissues. Non- invasive ones stay in the milk ducts. Non-invasive is the earliest stage of breast cancer.

Cancer staging is a universal way to categorize the severity of someone’s cancer. Stages 0 through IV are directly related to the tumour’s size and how much it has metastasized.
Higher stages equal a larger tumour and cancer cells that are more widely distributed, according to Cleveland Clinic. The cancer’s stage determines how to treat it.
WHAT GRADE IS MY TUMOUR?
Looking at tumour cells under a microscope determines its grade. The grade depends on how different it looks from healthy cells. The higher the grade, the more likely the cancer will spread.
IS THE CANCER IN MY LYMPH NODES?
When breast cancer appears in lymph nodes, it generally determines how severe the cancer is.
