Dr. R. A. Sastry, Thursday, November 7, 2019

WHAT IS ENDOSCOPIC SURGERY?

Endoscopic surgery uses scopes going through small incisions or natural body openings in order to diagnose and treat disease. Another popular term is minimally invasive surgery (MIS), which emphasizes that diagnosis and treatments can be done with reduced body cavity invasion.

WHAT ARE THE CASES WHERE ENDOSCOPIC SURGERY IS USED?

Endoscopies fall into categories, based on the area of the body that they investigate:

  • Arthroscopy is used to examine joints. The scope is inserted through a small incision near the joint being examined.
  • Bronchoscopy is used to examine lungs. The scope is inserted into nose or mouth.
  • Colonoscopy is used to examine colon. The scope is inserted through anus.
  • Cystoscopy is used to examine bladder. The scope is inserted through urethra, which is the hole through which a person urinates.
  • Enteroscopy is used to examine small intestine. The scope is inserted through mouth or anus.
  • Hysteroscopy is used for the examining the inside of uterus. The scope is inserted through vagina.
  • Laparoscopy is used to examine abdominal or pelvic area. The scope is inserted through a small incision near the area that’s being examined.
  • Laryngoscopy is used to examine voice box, or larynx. The scope is inserted through mouth or nostril.
  • Mediastinoscopy is used to examine the area between the lungs called the “mediastinum.” The scope is inserted through an incision above breastbone.
  • Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is used to examine esophagus and upper intestinal tract. The scope is inserted through mouth.
  • Ureteroscopy is used to examine ureter. The scope is inserted through urethra.

WHAT IS NEEDED BEFORE ENDOSCOPIC SURGERY?

Any preparations that are needed would be restrictions on eating the night before the operation. Keep doctors informed of the medications that are being taken.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF ENDOSCOPIC SURGERY?

After any surgery, you should expect some pain. But it might not be where you expect. For instance, the ports for endoscopic surgery may be far from the site of your operation. So be clear on where you will feel discomfort, how severe it will be, and how long it will last.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF YOU NEED TO SWITCH TO OPEN SURGERY?

Occasionally, a surgeon must convert a minimally invasive surgery into traditional open surgery.

Find out how likely this is in your case. Ask how it might change the side effects or recovery time.

HOW LONG UNTIL I RECOVER?

Some minimally invasive procedures can be done on an outpatient basis, but others can't. You need to have realistic expectations for your recuperation. Get specifics. Ask whether you'll need any physical therapy.

WHAT MEDICINES WILL I NEED?

You will probably need painkillers after the operation. Find out the name and ask about the side effects. Make sure that the medicine won't interact with any other drugs that you need. Ask what to do if your pain reliever isn't helping enough.

WHAT ARE AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS?

Your doctor should provide you with specific instructions for how to take care of the incision at home. Make sure you understand them. Also, ask about signs of infection or complications you need to watch out for.
