GYNAECOLOGICAL CANCER: IDENTIFYING THE TYPES

Dr. Madhu Devarasetty, Friday, November 8, 2019

WHAT IS GYNECOLOGICAL CANCER?

Gynecologic cancers are the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells originating in the female reproductive organs, including the cervix, ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, vagina and vulva.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN TYPES OF GYNAECOLOGICAL CANCER?

There are basically four main types of gynecological cancers. These are:

  • Cervical: It is the caner of cervix, which located in the narrow, lower end of the uterus or womb. Cervical cancer is highly preventable in most cases. When detected early, cervical cancer is treatable and survivors usually enjoy a good quality of life.
  • Ovarian: It is cancer of ovary, which are organs found on either side of the uterus. They are responsible for the production of eggs and the creation of female hormones. The cancer is not easily identifiable; however, treatments can be very effective if the cancer is found in the early stages.
  • Uterine: It is the cancer of uterus, which is a par-shaped organ located in your pelvis (or lower abdomen). Endometrial cancer (which forms in the uterine lining, or endometrium) is the most common type of uterine cancer.
  • Vaginal & Vulvar: Though very rare, this is the cancer of vagina and in the inner folds of the labia. Vulvar cancer can spread to other parts of the body including the vagina and uterus.

WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS?

Signs and symptoms can be different for each woman, but here are a few things to look for:

  • Changes in appearance of outer reproductive organs, such as rashes, warts, sores or discoloration
  • Needing to use the bathroom more or less frequently
  • Pain in the abdomen or back
  • Pain or pressure in the pelvic area
  • Irregular bleeding or discharge
  • Bloating
  • Itching

CAN GYNECOLOGIC CANCERS BE PREVENTED?

Screening and self-examinations conducted regularly can result in the detection of certain types of gynaecologic cancers in their earlier stages, when treatment is more likely to be successful and a complete cure is a possibility. Diet, exercise and lifestyle choices play a significant role in the prevention of cancer. Additionally, knowledge of family history can increase the chance of prevention or early diagnosis by determining if someone may have a gene which makes them susceptible to cancer.

HOW ARE GYNAECOLOGIC CANCERS TREATED?

Gynaecologic cancers are treated by using one or more of the following: surgery, radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. The choice of therapy(s) depends on the type and stage of the cancer.
