WHAT IS RADIATION THERAPY?

Radiation therapy is used to kill cancer cells from mutating further. This procedure is used for breast cancer after the surgery to remove any more cancerous cells that prevail in the breast or the arm pit area.

Patients who can have radiation therapy as a part of their treatment should discuss with their breast cancer specialist in Hyderabad.

  • Patients with stage 0(DCIS)
  • Stage 1 invasive cancer and higher

Radiotherapy for breast cancer in Hyderabad isconducted by an experienced radiation oncologist approximately three to four weeksafter the surgery. The whole purpose is to remove the cancer cells that has remained and may goundetected and further to prevent the cancer from recurring in the treated breast.

There are two kinds of radiation administered for breast cancer patients while some patients are adviced to take both the treatments.

  • External Beam Breast Cancer Radiation:It’s an old method of treating the cancer cells given by a huge machine
  • Internal Breast Cancer Radiation: It’s a new technique where the cancer is treated by injecting radioactive substances into the affected area.

External Beam Breast Cancer Radiation: It’s the most traditional form of radiation which uses regular x-rays but the beam is accurately focused on the cancerous tissue. This procedure is conducted in multiple sessions. In certain cases the strength of the rays is increased and the duration too is reduced.

Internal Breast Cancer Radiation: In this procedure a radioactive substance is inserted into the body using needles, wires or a catheter and targets the cancerous area and the surrounding tissues to kill the remaining cancer cells. This procedure is also termed as partial breast radiation

Brachytherapy (Internal Radiation): A device is placed in the breast during surgery or after. It gives radiation directly to the site of the tumor or the tumor bed. It won’t take multiple sittings and can be finished in a day or within 5-7 days. However, only the radiation oncologists at the best breast cancer hospitals in Hyderabad can determine the nature and size of the tumor and a decision to give the right treatment.
