RECTAL CANCER: INCREASED INSTANCES IN YOUNGER PEOPLE

Dr. Nagendra Parvataneni, Friday, November 8, 2019

WHAT IS RECTAL CANCER?

Rectal cancer or colorectal is a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the rectum. Signs of rectal cancer include a change in bowel habits or blood in the stool.

WHY IS THERE AN INCREASE IN INCIDENCES OF RECTAL CANCER AMONG YOUNG?

Rectal cancer comes from an accumulation of mutations over time. The longer you live, the more mutations you build up that can become cancerous, and so we expect cancer risk to increase with age. However, poor diet and lack of exercise, is contributing to a higher risk.

Younger adults are more likely than older adults to be diagnosed with late-stage cancers. People in their 30s were about 30% more likely than other age groups to be diagnosed with cancers in stage III or IV. About 72% of cases of colorectal cancer in young people arise in the colon and about 28% in the rectum.

HOW TO PREVENT RECTAL CANCER IN PEOPLE UNDER AGE 50

Some of the ways to prevent rectal cancer are:

  • Screening has the potential to prevent colorectal cancer because polyps (precursors to cancer) can be removed during a colonoscopy screening. Furthermore, being screened at the recommended frequency increases the likelihood that when colorectal cancer is present, it will be detected at an earlier stage.
  • When colorectal cancer it detected in its early stages it is more likely to be cured, treatment is less extensive, and the recovery is much faster.
  • The risk of developing or dying from colorectal cancer can be reduced by maintaining a healthy body weight, regular physical activity, limiting intake of red and processed meats, and by not smoking.

WHAT SHOULD YOUNGER PEOPLE DO?

People with any rectal bleeding at all, even if it’s just for one day, need to see a doctor.

The chances are about 95 percent that it’s haemorrhoids, especially if you are also straining during a bowel movement. But a family doctor should also address it. Digital rectal exams can be given as well as a sigmoidoscopy, which is done in the office without the expense and inconvenience of a colonoscopy.
