Three Simple Habits for a Healthier Spine: World Spine Day 2026

Every 16th October, World Spine Day reminds us of something we tend to forget until it hurts: our spine carries us through life and asks for very little in return.

As a spine surgeon in Thane, I meet people struggling with severe back and neck pain every week. What surprises most of them is how simple spine protection can be. You don’t need a gym membership, expensive gadgets, or a complicated routine. Three small habits go a long way.

1) Sit with your back against the backrest.

Most of us slump or perch on the edge of the chair without realizing it. When your back rests fully against the backrest, the load on your lower spine and discs drops. Try making it a habit at your desk, in the car and at the dining table.

2) Don’t stay in one position for more than 40 minutes.

The spine is built to move, not to be held still. Every 40 minutes, stand up for a couple of minutes before sitting back down. Set a phone reminder if that helps. It costs you almost no time.

3) Walk for 40 minutes at a stretch, at least five days a week.

Morning, evening or lunch break, the timing doesn’t matter. Neither do speed, distance, or location. A garden, a society compound or a quiet lane works just as well as anything else. Walking keeps the muscles that support your spine strong, nourishes your discs and helps keep your weight in check.

Practiced consistently, these three habits protect most people from most spine problems, and over the years you will feel the difference in your back.

If you are already in pain

Some of you reading this may be living with severe, even debilitating, back or neck pain. Please know that it is treatable and that treatment is never one-size-fits-all. Two people with the same scan can need very different care. The right plan depends on your symptoms, your examination, your lifestyle, and your goals.

The good news is that most patients improve with non-surgical care: the right medication, targeted physiotherapy, adjusting daily activities, and, sometimes, injections. Surgery is the exception, not the rule.

When surgery is genuinely needed, it is very different from what most people fear. Modern minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgery uses small incisions, causes less muscle damage, and allows a faster recovery. Whether the problem is a cervical or lumbar condition or a spinal deformity, surgery done for the right reasons doesn’t hold your lifestyle back. It gives you back the life that pain was taking away, and it improves both the quality and the length of your active years.

This World Spine Day

Sit tall. Get up often. Walk daily. And if pain has become a part of your routine, please don’t just put up with it. Get a proper evaluation early.
