What is the pancreas and what are its functions?

Pancreas is a gland which performs activities of the endocrine as well digestive systems. It produces hormones such as insulin, glucagon, somatostatin and pancreatic polypeptide, which circulate in the blood. As it produces hormones it is a part of the endocrine system. Pancreas also secretes digestive juices which aid digestion and help the small intestine absorb nutrients, by assisting the break-down of carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.

The pancreas is also involved in sugar control and metabolism in the body, along with the secretion of substances which help digestion. Basically, they are divided into two roles the “endocrine" role, which relates to the secretion of insulin and other substances within pancreatic islets and helps control blood sugar levels and metabolism within the body, and an "exocrine" role, relating to the secretion of those enzymes involved in digesting substances from outside of the body. It is worthwhile to note that about 3 million clusters called the pancreatic islets are present in the body which performs the function of secreting hormones.

When and why is pancreas transplant needed?

Pancreas is a vital organ which performs certain important functions needed for the survival of the body. Our pancreas may suffer on account of diabetes mellitus or is susceptible to cancers which lead to the damage of the organ and its vital functions. To restore its functions, a healthy pancreas is transplanted from a cadaver donor in place of the damaged pancreas. Your doctors always aim at restoring the function of the pancreas before considering a replacement. The damaged pancreas is replaced only and only if it is inevitable.

In persons with type 1 diabetes, the pancreas fails to make enough, or sometimes any insulin. This causes high glucose to build up in the blood, leading to a high level of sugar content in the blood. High blood sugar in our blood over a sustained period time can cause many complications, including:

  • Heart Diseases
  • Amputations in the damaged portions
  • Nerve damages
  • Kidney dysfunction
  • Blindness
  • Risk of strokes

Pancreas transplantation addresses the risk of diabetes permanently, and insulin shots need not be taken. The main deciding factors of pancreas transplantation are the failure of long-term insulin therapy in the patients and renal failure. Pancreatitis or inflammation of the pancreas leads to fluid build which may lead to the need for transplantation of the pancreas.

In India Pancreas surgeries are just being done. It might not be feasible for individuals suffering from:

  • Severe Heart problems
  • Cancer or history of cancer
  • Problems with their lungs
  • Severely obese
  • Heavy smoking or alcohol abuse can damage the pancreas
