Tobacco remains frighteningly powerful in its grip on society and kills millions every year. Tobacco use causes nearly 9 million premature deaths around the world each year, making it one of the leading preventable causes of death. In India, around 1.5 lakh new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed every year and nearly 50% of these patients die of the disease in the first year of diagnosis, mostly because of late detection.
The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2026 – “Unmasking the Appeal of Tobacco and Nicotine Addiction” – draws attention to the ways in which the tobacco and nicotine industry continues to attract new users through changing marketing tactics. E-cigarettes and vaping devices have become a new surrogate for tobacco marketing, especially to youth, even though traditional tobacco products still dominate the market. Their attractive flavors, cool designs, influencer endorsements, and misconceptions about safety have made these products more appealing despite increasing evidence of their harmful effects and addictive potential.
I am a head and neck cancer surgeon, and I see the devastation of tobacco addiction every day. Oral cancer, Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF) and precancerous lesions most often develop silently and could be undiagnosed till advanced stages. But many of these conditions can be identified early with simple self-examination and timely screening.
On this World No Tobacco Day, I sincerely appeal to all tobacco users – be it smoking, chewing tobacco, gutkha, pan masala or use of nicotine products – to take the first step towards quitting. The benefits start almost immediately and each tobacco-free day is an investment in a healthier future.
At the same time, I encourage everyone to conduct a simple self-examination of the mouth. Search for:

Under the guidance of Dr. Hitesh R. Singhavi, KIMS Hospitals, a community-based tobacco-use and oral cancer screening survey was conducted in and around Thane at several public places from March to May 2026 to evaluate the awareness and tobacco-use behavior of the community. Of the 456 screened individuals, 35.5% were current tobacco users. The majority of users knew that tobacco was a cause of oral cancer, but alarmingly 87.7% still used tobacco despite this knowledge. 28% of study subjects had reduced mouth opening which is an indicator of possibly cancerous condition called Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF) associated with tobacco and areca nut use. Several participants were also identified with potentially malignant oral lesions that required further evaluation.
Know the risk. Break the addiction. Examine your mouth. Save your life.
Say No to Tobacco, Say Yes to Life.
