Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist
Dr. Sindhu R.S. is a well-known lady surgical gastroenterologist in Kerala, with over two decades of clinical, academic, and administrative experience. She is well known for her many successful surgeries, both open and laparoscopic. She is the first lady Gastro surgeon qualified from Kerala. She is a prominent figure in the public healthcare sector of Kerala.
After obtaining her MBBS (University of Kerala), Dr. Sindhu pursued a postgraduate degree in MS General Surgery (University of Kerala) and M.Ch. in Surgical Gastroenterology (Kerala University of Health Sciences) from Govt Medical College Trivandrum. Her academic journey reached a milestone when she earned a PhD in Surgery from the University of Kerala in 2023—making her the first lady surgeon in the state to do so. She also holds fellowships in laparoscopic surgery from both AMASI (FMAS) and IAGES (FIAGES).
Dr. Sindhu has performed over 1,500 major surgical procedures in the field of GI and HPB surgery, ranging from complex resections to minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries for benign and malignant conditions in gastroenterology. She is also recognized as a pioneering leader in liver transplantation in the public sector, having led the teams that accomplished the first successful liver transplant and the first living donor liver transplant in a government hospital in Kerala.
In addition to her clinical excellence, Dr. Sindhu has made substantial contributions to surgical education and research. She has mentored generations of medical students and junior doctors, organized three state-level conferences in surgical gastroenterology, and published over 25 research articles in reputed national and international journals. Her paper received the Best Research Award at the IASG National Conference in 2012. She has presented over 50 scientific papers across various prestigious platforms.
Her leadership extends beyond the operating room; she was instrumental in establishing a new department for SGE-HPB and liver transplantation in the Government Medical College, Kottayam. Recognized for her perseverance as a polio survivor, she serves as a source of inspiration in the medical community.
Dr. Sindhu is multilingual, fluent in English, Malayalam, Tamil, and Hindi. Outside of her profession, she is passionate about music, painting, reading, and travel. In 2014, she was selected for the Vanita Woman of the Year award, and in 2023, she was honored with the Woman of the Year Award by the government of Kerala for her exceptional contributions to the medical field.
