Fear, stigma, misconceptions, and lack of awareness continue to prevent many women from undergoing breast cancer screening, according to a pilot study by the Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation presented at the ASCO Annual Meeting 2026.
Dr. P. Raghu Ram emphasized that most breast lumps are not cancerous and that early detection can significantly improve the chances of cure while often allowing less extensive treatment.
Screening alone is not enough. Sustained awareness, culturally sensitive communication, trusted healthcare services, and education are essential to encourage women to take charge of their breast health.
Early detection can save lives. Awareness can make it possible.
