KIMS Hospital Fixes ‘off-the-ear’ Sound Processor for a two-year old
Hyderabad, September 14, 2016: Two year old, baby Gunjan, has received the latest off-the-ear sound processor ‘Kanso’. This first of its kind procedure was performed at KIMS Hospitals in Hyderabad,
According to Dr. Janardhan Rao Jagini, cochlear implant surgeon and Dr Shiva Prasad Boddupally, Senior Audiologist at KIMS, Gunjan was diagnosed with severe to profound hearing loss in both the ears when she was around eighteen months old. Initially, usual hearing aids were used to address the problem. However, after noticing no improvement, doctors at KIMS suggested cochlear implant surgery.
After fitting with external processor Gunjan will start hearing very softly. She can hear like any child after two to three months of fitting with speech processor. Child has to meet the audiologist to fine tune the speech processor.
The Kanso is the hearing part for interfacing with cochlear implants, capturing sounds using two microphones, converting them into a digital signal, and passing them to an implant under the skin. The implant delivers these signals to the cochlea where hearing nerve fibres absorb them and sends them to the brain.
Kanso, unlike the previous processor which resembles a behind the ear hearing aid, is very simple, cordless and its off the ear design gives a better chance at hiding the fact that you are wearing some device for the hearing. And since it comes in any one of eight colors, the job will be even easier. It has a single button on its body for basic controls and a separate remote control for managing all the other settings.
The Kanso Sound Processor features dual microphones and SmartSound iQ with SCAN, which allows the sound processor to automatically adjust to different listening environments, providing a seamless experience to the user.
The Kanso Sound Processor includes Cochlear True Wireless technology and provides access to the True Wireless range of accessories, allowing users to stream conversation, phone calls, music and television programs directly to their sound processor. Customers can also swim with their Kanso Sound Processor using the waterproof Aqua+ for Kanso accessory.
A cochlear implant (CI) is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing in both ears. Cochlear implants bypass the normal hearing process; they have a microphone and some electronics that reside outside the skin, which transmits a signal to an array of electrodes placed in the cochlea, which stimulate the cochlear nerve. Usual speech processor (external unit) weights around 25 to 30 grams (including standard battery, Coil and accessories) and it has to wear over the ear where as Kanso weighs 13 grams including the battery and it comfortably sits in the hair of the scalp making it almost invisible.
