Hyderabad, February 17, 2016 : KIMS Hospitals, the renowned multispecialty healthcare chain has yet again set new path-breaking benchmark in bariatric surgery by successfully undertaking Robotic Gastric Sleeve Procedures & Robotic Mini-Gastric Bypass on two patients, who are on the path to a healthy recovery. KIMS Hospitals has pioneered the field of robotic surgery, being one of the first in Hyderabad to introduce the robot-driven procedures. Having performed more than 350 highly critical and advanced robotic surgeries, specifically for cancer and gastro treatments, KIMS Hospitals extended the surgical procedure to treat obese patients.
Under the aegis of renowned Bariatric & Laparoscopic Surgeon, Dr T Lakshmikanth, the team has deployed the universally proven ‘daVinci Surgical System’ that acts as an impressive assistant in the surgical field with over 1.5 million procedures performed worldwide. Robotic surgery method is highly advanced using robots with minimal invasion and is more advanced than laparoscopic methodology. The procedure helps doctor take complete control of the robot, with each physical movement translated into an action of the robot, and enables greater precision and better control.
The high definition cameras deployed during surgery offer a field of vision, superior to previous generations of laparoscopes. The field of vision is both magnified and shown in 3 dimensional. Further, the robot has “wristed” arms, again controlled by the surgeon, that have an even a greater range of motion than a human’s. These wrists allow movements that simply aren’t possible with traditional laparoscopic tools.
Dr T Lakshmikanth, Senior Bariatric and Laparoscopic Surgeon said, “The patient who was operated upon two months ago is responding well in the form of ideal weight loss. The robots operate in 360 degree mode and can reach any deeper portion and difficult-to-access parts, especially the stomach blood vessels. The suturing becomes so accurate since normal and straight-shaped equipment can reach in limited portions while the robotic one is highly flexible. The advantages of less blood loss and faster recovery besides no scars and no side effects make Robotic surgeries most advanced and ideal. KIMS Hospital has a dedicated robotic theatre for the objective.”
“The procedure was started on the individual weighing 136kgs at the age of 45 years. His complaints were snoring and pedel edema or swelling as a result of excess fluid in foot. We undertook the robotic process, and the patient, has so far lost 25 kgs. He is supposed to lose 60 kgs as per his Body Mass Index and this will achieved over a period one year,” said Dr Lakshmikanth.
Congratulating the team on the occasion, Dr B Bhaskar Rao, Chairman and Managing Director, KIMS Hospitals, said, “We are proud that KIMS Hospitals once again surpassed its own standards and benchmarks. Our endeavor to offer the latest and the best service to the patients has been motivating us in this direction. The robotic bariatric surgery is one such milestone and we are confident to bring more in the days to come. The robotic surgery process brought with it excellent advantages including much quicker gastrointestinal recovery, which, in turn reduced the incidences of pneumonia and aspirations.”
Patient-1
AM Singh, a 44-year-old Hyderabad-based businessman approached KIMS with problem in his legs. The problem was due to his overweight of 136 kgs, and was advised to opt for weight loss procedure. Having gone through consultations and gaining confidence on the latest technique, Singh decided to go with Robotic bariatric procedure. After the surgery the recovery is faster without any side effects, and Singh lost around 20 kilograms in just about three months. By following a healthy diet that is liquid in nature, coupled with proper exercise, Singh could lose another 20kgs in the next six months.
