AORTIC STENOSIS

Dr. V. S. Srinath, Friday, October 25, 2019

The aorta performs a unique function of pumping blood from the aortic valves from the heart into the aorta and further ensures that the blood doesn’t leak back into the heart. Aortic stenosis is a condition wherein the aortic valves do not open normally which makes the heart work harder resulting in inadequate supply to the body.

Causes of Aortic Stenosis :

1. The aging factor: Heart valve surgeons at KIMS Hospitals in Hyderabad explain how age plays a role in aortic stenosis. As one grows old the calcium deposits on the aortic valve increase. For some, this doesn’t hamper the function of the aorta while in few others, these calcium deposits and thickening of the walls result in the narrowing of the aortic valve. There is increased pressure in the heart and would further lead to a heart block.

2. People born with abnormal valves: Basically the aortic valve is comprised of three cusps. The cusps hold the entire work of the aortic valve together. Few are born with just two cusps bicuspid or one cusp uni-cuspid. This is an abnormal valve and it has to be surgically corrected else they may lead to frequent aortic aneurysms and a rupture.

People with such a condition have to visit KIMS Valve Centre for Aortic Stenosis Treatment to have regular screening done by a cardiologist. This condition is seen among 1-2 percent of the population. It can also be hereditary. Hence, it becomes necessary for people of all generations, who have had a bicuspid valve or a bicuspid aortic valve, to get it evaluated by your physician.

3. Other Reasons: An untreated or unattended rheumatic fever results in throat infection and rheumatic heart disease. Here the cusps are attached resulting in a narrowed opening. It is most commonly found among old people.

Symptoms of Aortic Stenosis :

The symptoms include :

1. Shortness in breath and swelling

2. Angina – A condition due to chest pain

3. Syncope - Fainting bouts now and then

It’s very important to get yourself thoroughly examined once you have the above symptoms. In many cases, surgery alone can correct the stenosis.

If you are found eligible for surgery, your cardiologist may ask you to go for a valve replacement surgery at KIMS Hospitals in Hyderabad. If the symptoms have been progressive it’s better to get the aortic valve replaced rather than waiting and wasting your time looking for more significant symptoms which may lead to severe adversities later.
