BLADDER CANCER TYPES AND SYMPTOMS

Dr. Sharat Reddy Putta, Thursday, November 7, 2019

Abnormal growth of cells in the bladder which show signs of malignancy is termed as bladder cancer. Persons with bladder cancer may or may not experience symptoms till the latter stages. Cancer can affect any part of the bladder. There are different types of bladder cancer.

Different types of Bladder Cancer:

  • Transitional Cell Bladder Cancer: About 90% of cancers of the bladder fall under this category. It is also termed as urothelial cancer and occurs in the lining of the bladder or urothelium. The cells that line the bladder is bunched as a group when the bladder is empty and stretched as a single layer and are termed as transitional cells. These cells are in constant contact with waste products in the urine if a person is a smoker they are in contact with the chemical agents of the cigarette smoke. Transitional cells can be classified further into:
  • Non Muscle invasive or superficial bladder cancers: They are termed as early stage transitional bladder cancers. Cancer usually occurs in the lining of the bladder. They are sized to the size of a mushroom and shaped similarly. They are also called papillary bladder cancer and can be extracted, and do not come back again. Certain types of bladder cancer may come back. They are carcinoma in situ (CIS) and very high-grade T1 tumors. High-grade T1 tumors are invasive and spread quickly to other areas such as lamina or propiria. The cancers are classified and treated as per the intensity and treated accordingly.
  • Invasive bladder cancers: Cancers that get into the inner layers of the bladder become invasive and need more urgent and intense treatments. They spread into the muscle layers of the bladder and spread beyond and may need chemotherapy, radiation or surgery depending on the intensity.

Other types of bladder cancer include:

  • Squamous bladder cancer: Squalors cells are flat and are most tissues that line up the body organs. They mostly occur in people where worm infections such as bilharzia or schistosomiasis are prevalent.
  • Adenocarcinoma of the bladder: This s a rare type of bladder cancer. It develops in the lining of the bladder cells that produce mucus. Rare types of bladder cancer include soft cell sarcoma or small cell cancer of the bladder which may require extraction of the bladder. The bladder can be affected by a secondary type of cancers which may originate in the womb or the cervix or any other portion and may spread to the bladder.

Symptoms of bladder cancer include:

  • Difficulty in urination
  • Swelling of the bladder
  • No urination at all
  • Itchy sensation
  • Thickening of the bladder wall
  • Bloody urine
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Urge to urinate frequently
  • Abnormal growth on the bladder that can be seen and felt
