DON’T IGNORE MIGRAINE HEADACHE THEY MAY CAUSE BRAIN TUMOR

Tuesday, June 2, 2020

Migraine is a type of headache which is very painful and severe. It can last for hours together. Headache is usually accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and tingling sensation in the face. The pain is unbearable and excruciating which is affecting about 60 million worldwide including juveniles, adolescents and adults alike. Migraines are often misdiagnosed as sinus or any other type of headaches. Migraines are usually chronic and need a good neurosurgeon to attend. Only specialist neurosurgeons can identify your headache and treat it effectively, hence don’t ignore the symptoms or the triggers and visit a special neurological care centre like KIMS.

TRIGGERS OF A MIGRAINE:

  • Common allergies or an allergic reaction to smell or food
  • Loud sounds or noises or jarring music
  • Changes in temperatures
  • Dehydration
  • Lack of sleep
  • Eating any food which does not suit us.
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol
  • Medications or hormone replacement therapy
  • Menstrual cycle related
  • Obesity is known to trigger episodic migraines
  • Hereditary causes such as gene mutations in blood relations

SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:

  • Feeling of sickness and dullness
  • Moderate to excruciating pain felt on one side of our head
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Vision problems such as unable to see clearly or having a complete black out.
  • Inability to do daily activities like walking, cooking etc due to unbearable headache
  • Increased amounts of pain during physical stress.
  • Headache accompanied by diarrhea, stomach or abdominal pain and discomfort.

Certain people experience migraine with an Aura or beforehand warning that your headache is on its way. Auras are usually termed as perceptual disturbances like:

  • Hazy feeling
  • Confusion
  • A clear despondency
  • Depressive thoughts
  • Blind spots or an unclear vision
  • Changes in the speech pattern

Headaches that come with a warning sign or Aura are often known to cause a stroke likely and need to be addressed immediately. Migraine with aura usually affects women four times more than their male counterparts. Smoking, estrogen therapy, use of conceptive pills is known to increase the risk of aura related migraines which eventually leads to a stroke. Migraine with a warning sign can trigger an ischemic stroke in future. Stroke is an emergency and needs to be treated immediately. Stroke occurs when the blood supply to brain or heart is cut off and needs to be treated then and there. A migraine and stroke can occur together in some people at one go though very rare. Migrainous infarction is the term given to describe an ischemic stroke occurring with a migraine attack, simultaneously

In this particular condition aura symptoms are quite prolonged, and ischemic stroke is confirmed by being shown in a brain scan report. However, research does suggest that such a stroke would be definitely independent of the migraine attack. It is also practically possible for a person to have a stroke but for this to have been mistaken for a migraine attack by him or people present with him during the attack. The migraine aura is capable enough to mimic transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). There is clear medical evidence that conversely, in stroke, headache similar to migraine may occur, which may always be misinterpreted or mistreated. The risk groups of ischemic stroke are:

  • Women with migraine
  • Smokers who have migraine with aura present
  • Women currently on oral contraceptives who had experienced migraine with aura

Negligence in such cases should be avoided. It is always the best option to go a good neurologist for help. The neurologist may suggest a brain scan or CT scan or certain routine tests to identify the root cause and the treatment is always based on diagnosis.
