Hospital launches a dedicated Robotic counselling center to mark the occasion
Hyderabad, May 26th, 2016: The Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, a leading healthcare provider in South India today announced that it has successfully completed 600 Davinci Robot surgeries in the past 5 years. The announcement was made on the sidelines of launch of a dedicated Robotic counselling center in the hospital.
Inaugurated by Dr B Bhaskar Rao, CEO, KIMS hospitals, the counselling center is the ideal platform to educate patients and their near ones on the advantages of robotic surgeries, so that the patients and their family could take informed decisions on the protocols to be adopted under critical conditions. Currently, there is a large gap in this understanding.
Commenting on the surgeries and launch of new counselling center, Dr G Suresh Kumar, gastrointestinal surgeon at KIMS Hospitals said, “Robotic surgeries are a new concept in India and not all departments across hospitals are using this effectively. Many times it has been noted that even the Doctors treating patients for critical conditions, are not aware of benefits of robotic surgeries in certain fields or its availability in India. It is unfortunate that the patients are not aware of the availability of robotic surgeries in certain specializations like ENT, because very few hospitals in the country offer these services.”
In 2009-10, there were just 4-5 doctors in the country, who were trained in Robotic surgery protocols. However, a huge thrust is being prophesied to this segment, and hence Indiais likely to witness a quantum jump in this arena.
According to available statistics, the number of robotic surgeries being performed in India has increased to 3000 to 4000 per year, which is still very less considering eclectic spectrum of our country. And KIMS Hospitals is at the fore-front to concoct its doctors and patronage this program to augment for the betterment of their patients. KIMS is also amongst the first hospitals to capitalize and gain expertise on robot-assisted surgeries.
Talking about the procedure to use the Davinci Robot, Dr G Suresh Kumar said, “One needs specialized training and certification which has to come from Intuitive Surgical’s, the parent arm of Davinci Robot, for licensing to use the Machine.”
Surgical robot has 4 arms that can reach organs and areas that seemed dreadful for human fingers. The 3-dimensional view with intense zooming helps the surgeons attain meticulous and unmatched results. Surgical Robots combine the best of science, engineering and medicine. The major advantages of robotic surgery are to conduct the procedure under 3D vision, minimal blood loss, fast patient recovery, access to inaccessible areas in Human body and above all post-operative pain will be less.
KIMS has been performing scar-less surgeries in areas like thyroid surgery through axilla, where there is no scar in front of the neck unlike traditional surgery. Surgery for Oesophageal cancer with 03 field lymph nodal dissection; KIMS is the only centre doing this procedure in India. Also, they perform surgery for any type of cancer or non-cancer conditions inside the abdomen; Cancer of the kidneys, Partial removal of kidneys which is possible with Robotic Surgery, Pyeloplasty.
Some of the doctors who were incharge of robotic programme were Dr. Bhaskar Rao, CEO, Dr. Jagdishwar Goud, Surgical oncologist, Dr. Gopichand, Urologist, Dr. Kavitha Naragoni, Gynaecologist, Dr. Laksmikanth, Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgery, Dr. Madhu, Surgical oncologist, Dr Kalyan Charavarthy, ENT.
